Reima has committed to the Science Based Targets initiative

Reima is the first Finnish clothing company to commit to the global Science Based Targets initiative. In accordance with the initiative, Reima will define emission reduction targets that support the Paris Agreement goal of limiting the global warming to 1.5 degrees. Targets will apply to Reima’s own operations as well as the whole value chain.

Reima has calculated the annual greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations and taken measures to reduce them since 2019. Reima has also offset the emissions from its operations since 2020. However, most of the companys emissions are so-called indirect emissions that are produced different stages of the value chain.

For the first time in 2021, Reima conducted a carbon footprint analysis of its whole value chain in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, the worlds mostly used carbon accounting standard. According to the analysis, the production of textile fibers and fabrics account for over 80% of the value chain emissions. Consequently, the choice of materials and product design has a central role in reaching Reimas emission reduction targets.

Reima focuses, for example, on recycled materials: in the upcoming spring 2022 collection, over half of the outdoor apparel items are made with recycled materials, and the goal is to increase the number even further. Reima will also collaborate with its suppliers to reduce emissions within the supply chain.

Reimas detailed emission reduction targets will be published during 2022, after they have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. The targets are considered science-based if they are in line with what the latest climate science deems necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement limiting global warming to well-below 2°C above pre industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.
